Gardeners North Finchley Health and Safety Policy
Gardeners North Finchley is committed to providing gardening and grounds maintenance services in a safe and responsible manner. This Health and Safety Policy sets out our approach to protecting our employees, clients, visitors and members of the public, as well as safeguarding property and the environment during our work.
Policy Aims and Objectives
The aim of this policy is to prevent accidents, injuries and work-related ill health arising from our gardening activities. Our objectives are to identify hazards in advance, assess the risks linked to our tasks, and implement suitable control measures to reduce those risks as far as is reasonably practicable.
We will continually review and improve our health and safety arrangements to reflect changes in legislation, industry standards and the nature of our services.
Management Responsibilities
Management at Gardeners North Finchley is responsible for implementing this Health and Safety Policy and ensuring that adequate resources are available to maintain safe working practices. Duties include planning work safely, providing appropriate tools and equipment, maintaining machinery, and making sure health and safety procedures are followed on every site.
Supervisors and team leaders must monitor day-to-day operations, ensure that staff understand site-specific risks, and stop any work that cannot be carried out safely. They are also responsible for reporting incidents promptly and supporting any investigations.
Employee Responsibilities
All employees, contractors and temporary workers have a duty to take reasonable care of their own health and safety and that of others who may be affected by their actions. Everyone working for Gardeners North Finchley must:
Follow all safety instructions and site rules, use tools and machinery correctly, wear the required personal protective equipment, report hazards, near-misses and incidents, and never work under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
Health and safety is a shared responsibility. We expect open communication so that concerns can be raised early and dealt with effectively.
Risk Assessment and Safe Working Practices
Before commencing work, we assess site-specific risks related to gardening and grounds maintenance. This includes, where relevant, the use of powered machinery, working on uneven or sloped ground, handling of plants and soils, waste removal, and any interaction with traffic, pedestrians or neighbouring properties.
Based on these assessments, we put in place safe systems of work and method statements as appropriate. These cover, for example, how equipment should be used, how areas are cordoned off, and how materials are moved and stored. Staff are briefed on these controls and are expected to follow them at all times.
Use of Machinery and Tools
Gardeners North Finchley uses a range of gardening tools and machinery, such as lawn mowers, hedge trimmers, leaf blowers and cutting tools. Only trained and authorised personnel may use powered equipment. Equipment must be inspected regularly, maintained in good condition, and taken out of service if any fault is identified.
When operating machinery, staff must use guarding and safety devices, avoid loose clothing that could become entangled, and maintain safe distances from other workers and members of the public. Fuel and other consumables are handled and stored safely to reduce fire and environmental risks.
Personal Protective Equipment
Appropriate personal protective equipment is provided where required by risk assessments. This may include safety footwear, gloves, eye protection, hearing protection, high-visibility clothing and respiratory protection for specific tasks.
Employees must use the protective equipment provided, look after it correctly, and report any defects so that items can be repaired or replaced. Personal protective equipment is regarded as a last line of defence and does not replace safe work planning.
Chemicals, Substances and Environmental Protection
Where gardening work involves the use of any substances that could present a risk, such as certain treatments or fuels, we follow relevant safety guidance and manufacturer instructions. Only trained personnel may handle such products, which are stored securely and used in a controlled manner.
We aim to minimise environmental impact by avoiding unnecessary use of chemicals, managing waste responsibly, and preventing contamination of soil, drains and watercourses. Green waste is handled in a way that reduces risk of injury, pests and fire.
Manual Handling and Working Conditions
Gardening work can involve lifting, carrying and repetitive movements. To reduce the risk of strains and other injuries, we assess manual handling tasks and use mechanical aids or team lifts where appropriate. Staff are encouraged to use good posture, avoid overreaching, and take breaks as needed.
We also consider weather conditions, hydration, exposure to sun and cold, and the need for rest during physically demanding work. Safe access and egress to all areas of work is maintained wherever reasonably practicable.
Public Safety and Site Security
Many of our gardening projects take place in areas accessible to residents, customers and the general public. We plan work to minimise disruption and risk, using barriers, cones, warning signs and safe cordons where necessary.
Tools and machinery are never left unattended in a way that could endanger others. At the end of each working period, we secure the site as far as possible, remove or safely store equipment, and ensure paths and access routes are left free from avoidable obstructions.
Training, Information and Consultation
Gardeners North Finchley provides information, instruction and training to ensure employees can perform their tasks safely and competently. Training needs are reviewed regularly and whenever new equipment, techniques or procedures are introduced.
We consult with staff on health and safety matters, encouraging them to contribute ideas for improving safety in our gardening operations. Feedback is taken seriously and used to refine our procedures.
Accidents, Incidents and Emergency Arrangements
All accidents, injuries, near-misses and hazardous occurrences must be reported as soon as possible. This enables prompt first aid and ensures that any underlying causes are investigated. Records are kept and reviewed to identify patterns and opportunities for improvement.
Emergency procedures are in place for incidents such as fire, serious injury and sudden changes in weather conditions. Staff are briefed on how to respond, including when to stop work and leave the site, and how to obtain assistance.
Policy Review
This Health and Safety Policy is reviewed regularly to ensure it remains suitable for the type of gardening and grounds maintenance work carried out by Gardeners North Finchley. Revisions may be made following changes in legislation, significant incidents, or after feedback from employees and clients.
By working together and following this policy, we aim to ensure that all gardening services are delivered safely, professionally and with respect for people and the environment.
